Level 5 BCU process has begun

Committed2thecore’s 2012 sea kayaking schedule will have lots of great new ideas, many of them inspired by my BCU Level 5 training.

I recently spent an incredible week in Ireland with 11 other eager paddlers and two of the world’s best sea kayaking instructors, Oisin Hallisay and Mike McClure, as part of the intensive British Canoe Union Level 5 training program.

In most programs I have taken or delivered, the first meeting is all about who you are, what you want to get out of the program, and getting to know your fellow paddlers. Well the instructors turned that idea on its ear. They told us that there was a mini bus with a trailer loaded with boats, and we were to pack up our stuff because we were heading out to an island to spend the night. That was just the start of some unexpected, and pleasant, surprises.

Our group was made up of 8 sea kayakers and 4 white water kayakers. During the 7-day program we were exposed to many different classroom based sessions: visualization exercise, learning styles, learning types, personality profiling, and how to work with all types of people in groups. Once the classroom-based sessions were done, we moved onto the water. Oisin brought in Howard Jeffs, Gordon Brown, Kevin Mansell, Andy Stamp and Nigel Robinson for two days of practical coaching. I had the pleasure of two days of on water coaching with Nigel Robinson (a fellow P&H team member).

I am now planning the 2012 Committed2theCore sea kayaking programs. Some of the innovations I plan to introduce as a result of the BCU training include:

Having a wide range of exercise for different types of learning in different conditions (flat water, current, waves and wind)
Taking the time to obverse the students at the start of a program to get a clear understanding of where they are, and what they need to work on.
After an on water session, have 2 or 3 tips and tricks to pass along to the student.

My BCU training will conclude in November 2012, when I return to the UK with 4 sea kayaking students. I will develop a customized training plan for each of the six and work with them to attain their goals. They will take part in an assessment, in which I will be observed by two other level 5 instructors to see if my training plan worked. I will also be assessed on my ability to develop practical teaching situations.

As I arrive in Ireland I am reminded of my last visit to the emerald isle. Solo paddling on the North coast in 3 meter swell going by the giants causeway and not event noticing it as my grip on the paddle overwhelmed all other senses. White water paddling in snow flurries asking myself are the foot craps worth it? Last of all paddling with my good friend Oisin and getting hit n the face with a white water boat and arriving home in Canada with a black eye. Great memories for sure.

This time I am back for a different purpose. For the next 7 days I will be taking part in the BCU level 5 coach training program. It has been a long road to get this point but it has been a great journey. I am excited and nervous about the next 7 days. I have heard many things about level 5 training and I am heading into this experience with a clear mind.

As one of the only Canadian sea kayak coaches that I know of who has taken part in the level 5 training process I looking forward to bringing back new ideas, approaches to coaching paddle sport and a few tips and trick to my fellow coaches and students.

I will post more as we get into the guts of the program and if I am able I will take a few pictures as well.

MEC Paddlefest June 12

We had a successful day at the MEC Paddlefest held in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia.

The day started off with a bit of fog but by days end the sun was splitting the rocks.

Trudy and Vincent were working hard at the demo tent informing people about the P&H, Venture and Pyranha lines and I was busy with clinics on the water.

I am not sure what the total numbers were but I am sure MEC will be pleased with the turn out for this years event. Really enjoyed meeting many new paddlers. Hope to see some of them again this summer on the water.

Shubie Tidal bore sea kayak surfing

This is a video of Matt Nelson and I (Christopher Lockyer) surfing the tidal bore on the Shubie river in Nova Scotia. May 17 2011. We were out testing the new P&H Delphin and they preformed well. We were pleased with the overall hull speed. Being only 155 in length I was worried about being able to catch the fast tidal waves but it only took a few more stokes to get on the waves and once you were on it was a dream. We were able to carve and change direction with ease. Matt and I even got some great back surfs as well.

Atlantic Paddle Symposium 2011 May 20-23 Terra Nova, Newfoundland

Matt, Don and I made the journey from Nova Scotia in the Tacoma with my trailer in tow full of boats. It was a great crossing on the ferry from NS. We arrived in Port Aux Basque to a little sunshine but that quickly changed to rain and 5 degrees as we drove across Newfoundland.

Well we knocked it out of the park this year. 28 world-class coaches lead 120 paddlers at the three-day event, held from May 20 to 23, 2011 near Terra Nova, Newfoundland. I am very pleased with the way the whole event went.

Newfoundland’s say it is not a proper May 24^th weekend without a little snow. Saturday morning with an air temperature of 2 degrees and a 25 knot wind from the North it snowed for a brief moment so that was a great start for the event. I am sure everyone was thankful they had a great suit to keep them warm.

Highlights of the fourth annual event, which featured sessions for canoeists and white water kayakers and sea kayaks, included:

· Mark Scriver teaching solo canoe sessions in white water and then hitting the sea to help run a rock hopping session

· Canoe Poling with Kevin Silliker, the master of the pole

· Mark Scriver leading solo canoe session on white water

· Maligiaq Paddilla, world Greenland rolling champion, teaching Greenland rolling and paddling techniques

· Brenna Kelly leading paddlers down some of the most challenging white water Newfoundland has to offer

· Christopher Lockyer leading two dynamic rock hopping sessions, one in 20 knot winds and 3-meter swells

· Kevin Callan sharing tips and tricks about enjoying the outdoors

· Loads of stokes and skill development sessions

· And Matt Nelson working with students on incident management

Let the 2011 Sea Kayak season begin

Just got finished a great program with two great paddlers. We spend three days paddling around Nova Scotia. Day one was spent in the Little Harbor area working on strokes and boat control. Day two was spent at Clam harbor playing in the surf and day three was spent on the Shubie Tidal bore.

The temperatures on day one were a bit on the cool side but both Denis and Stephane did very well. Little harbor was socked in with fog and visibility was less than 100 meters at times. We had a good time playing in the rocks but were unable to get out into the larger swell due to the lack of visibility.

Day two started off with a little tidal pay at the Salmon River bridge outflow. We worked on boat control and using the current as a aid to turn and move the boat. We backed the boats up and headed down to Clam Harbor provincial park which is closed at this time of year but you are still able to access the beach. We arrived to a nice 5 foot swell breaking on the beach. We spent the rest f the afternoon in the sun playing in the surf.

On Day three we ended the session with a run on the Shubi tidal bore. The bore ran early so we were shuttleing boat at 7:00 am to get up to a windy and very cold Maitland wharf. The bore showed up amd we heading up river. The cold Nort East wind made it hard to get on the waves but all of us got a few great rides.

Paddle Canada and BCU programs

2011 is going to be an exciting time in Atlantic Canada. We are going to be running several joint courses.

Campebello Island Light House

July 21-25 we will be running a Paddle Canada Level 2/3 skills course as well as a BCU 4 Star training plus a BCU coastal navigation program.
We will be bringing John Camody (level 5 BCU coach) up from Booth Bay in Maine to help run the programs. I think these 4 programs will compliment each other very well. We will be running the program on Deer Island which provides a great a very interesting area to paddle. Thick fog, plenty of coastal island and the Bay of Fundy tides. What else can you ask for. Paul Kuthe on the Shubie

October 1-5 we will be running a Level 4 Paddle Canada skills program in combination with a BCU 5 Star training course. We will be bringing Nick Cunliffe (level 5 Coach) in from Wales to help run this program. The first 3 days will be spent on the Easter Shore on Nova Scotia working on navigation, leadership and surfing skills and the last two days will be spent on the Shubie tidal bore. Back in Wales - Level 3 BCU assessment.

I found myself leave a warm Nova Scotia and arriving in England during one of the coldest Decembers on record.

I had been working hard to get all my BCU paper work in line so I would be able to get my level 3 Sea assessment done. I got my notice from the BCU that my APL application was approved and booked my ticket the day after. This would be the Last Level 3 BCU sea assessment that would run before the new UKCC coaching scheme would come into affect.

As I arrived in Holy head I noticed that everything was as I remembered. The taxi pulled up to Anglesey Outdoors www.angleseyoutdoors.com the former ASSC owned by Nigel Dennis after 24 hours I was in Wales.

The assessment went and I am happy to say that I passed. It was a strange feeling to be the one being assessed after 8 years of teaching and assessing skills on many of my own Paddle Canada programs.

I would like to Thank Mark Tozer, Mark Tozer's Blog post about the assessment Nick Cunliffe and Aled Williams for there great leadership while on the course. If it was not for Canoe Kayak Nova Scotia I would not have been able to make the trip. Justine and I went for a paddle and were joined by Ulrika Larsson. It was great to head out to North Stack and South stack. The races were not working well but it was great to be back on the water with Justine.How lucky am I to be able to paddle with these two great looking woman?

5th Annual Downeast Sea Kayaking Symposium

I have just returned from the 5th annual Downeast Sea Kayak Symposium run by Mark and Mel Rice-Schoon at Carpe Deim Kayak Company and it was a blast! The event drew participants from throughout the Northeast of U.S.A. and Canada, and as far away as California.

Like most symposiums, this event focuses on skill development at all levels. Mark and Mel have created a symposium which provides exceptional balance for all participants. The range of skills offered through the sessions at this symposium ranged from basic strokes, navigation to technical rock and ledge paddling skills and tidal current management.

In addition to being able to participate and teach several of these skill clinics, I was also able to paddle my newest P&H Sea Kayaks team boat – the Cetus LV. If your a smaller paddler this is the boat for you. I had a great play in the tidal race and around the rocks. Love the new day hatch, great for your camera and extra bits. My Kokatat GORE-TEX® Meridian Dry Suit and Ronin Pro PFD served me well during the whole event.
The wide range of skills that are offered through sessions at this symposium are due to the expansive pedigree of the coaches involved. Mark and Mel brought some exceptional talent for this year’s event. Nigel Robinson from Wales, P&H Team members – John Carmody, Steve Maynard, Russell Farrow and Suzanne Hutchinson – Kokatat New England sales representative. Along with the coaching staff, the volunteer efforts of Werner Maas, Nate Hanson and several students from the expedition planning program at Plattsburg University has certainly not gone unnoticed, great job everyone!

If you have not had the chance to paddle in the Bar Harbor area I would highly recommended it. You can find many day trip areas in and around Mountain Desert Island. The coast line is littered with larger rock cliffs as well as rock outcroppings, which provide ample opportunity for skill progression and fun. For those of you interested in tidal paddling, the tidal stream at Sullivan Fall’s is well worth the trip. The falls forms standing waves on both the ebb and flood. One cannot forget Acadia National park and everything else the Bar Harbor area brings with it, great pubs, local beer and great people.

Atlantic Paddle Sympsoium 2010

“We would like to thank everyone who attended the APS event this year held on the Eastern Shore and hosted by Memory Lane Heritage Village, Lake Charlotte. The event was a huge success and without your participation it would not have happened. This is the third year for the event and we increased our attendance by 50% from last year.
The event kicked off with a great dinner sponsored by Canoe/Kayak Nova Scotia and a slideshow by Kokatat sales representative Mark Scriver on the “Evolution of Paddle Sport in Canada”. Mark gave a great personal perspective on the ever changing faces of paddling; mediums, equipment, direction and styles.

Saturday’s sessions were full of very keen paddlers: sea kayak surfing drew over 20 people to Clam Harbour, which was delivering a three foot break. White water paddlers took plunges in the water and were rescued by Rob Lemmon in his swift water rescue clinic. Kelsey Thompson ran a great white water kayak session on the Musquodoboit River. In the afternoon Kokatat Ambassador Greg Stamer led the Greenland skills session, while other paddlers were on the sea with Richard Alexander mastering strokes. Saturday was capped off by Greg Stamer giving a presentation on his circumnavigation of the Island of Newfoundland.
Sunday began with a nice yoga session by Deborah Moore-Boylan in the old school house. Morning sessions of canoe pole and rock hopping were hindered a little bit by high winds but we all made the best of it and persevered. The rest of the day brought a variety of sessions with a large array of boats on the Lake. Sessions included a stand up paddle board session with Mark Scriver, while Jamie Maillet and Peter Lavigne led an incident management session. Scott Cunningham ended the day while posing the question “Is there a right way to paddle?”
The whole weekend was a huge success chocked full of valuable sessions and a great deal of enjoyment. This successful event would not have been possible were it not for the ongoing support and dedication of the organizing committee. I would personally like to thank Jamie Maillet (C2TC and New Brunswick Paddle Canada rep), Blair Doyle (Paddle Canada President), Richard Alexander (former Paddle Canada Rep), Alan Stanley (Paddle Canada treasurer), Rob Lemon and Corey Lock (Newfoundland and Labrador Paddle Canada rep).

From Cold to Golden ... Gate that is.

Golden Gate Sea Kayak Symposium

I leave my house in Hilden, it’s -2 degrees, toque on head and heat on high I drive to the airport hoping the weather is warmer in San Francisco. I am also filled with excitement (which provides at least a bit more warmth) as I am heading to California to take part in the Golden Gate Sea Kayak Symposium February 26-28.

The schedule was action packed; three full days of sea kayak skills session including a standard day paddle around the San Francisco Bay, a paddling trip to Alcatraz, advanced tidal stream training, and rock garden sessions. Event Organizers Sean Morley and Matthew Palmariello have really done a great job to plan what will assuredly be a great event.

Day 1

Forecast for the day is looking grim. The winds were to come from the South 35 knots increasing to gusts of 50 in the afternoon. If any of you have paddled in 50 knot winds you know that it is hard to make any progress and the swell that is generated by these wind speeds can create challenging water for even the most experienced sea kayaker. The options were limited to how far we would be able to go based on the forecast. I was given the task of helping to lead a trip around the San Francisco Bay area. As we left the shelter bay of Horseshoe Cove it was obvious we would not be going very far today. As we rounded Yellow Bluff an area well known for a 4 - 5 knot tide race, many people were challenged to stay upright let alone smile and enjoy the conditions. We worked our way into more sheltered water and tried to make the best of the situation. We had to end the trip early in Sausalito. As the boats blew down the beach and the rain pounded us in the face Matthew and I were pleased that we had made the call to end the day. Many of the session participants commented after the day of paddling that they have never experienced such extreme weather in California.. This After the Exhausted but not deterred we all moved back to the Marin Headlands Hostel; the night was filled with some great presentation Jeff Allan on his worldly adventure; I was privileged to do a presentation on Atlantic Canada and the night was finished off by Gordon Brown on Paddling in Scotland.

Day 2

As the sun rose in Marin County and the wild turkeys woke us with their ghostly calls, it was time to paddle again. We were blessed with a better forecast; clear skies and lighter winds but a tsunami was lurking on the coast of C as a result of a massive 8.8 scale earthquake off the coast of Chile so we were definitely wary of that. The adverse weather wasn’t a factor in Horse Shoe cove while we worked on mastering strokes with Ben Lawry but other participants on Angel Island weren’t as lucky with reported 4-6 foot waves hitting the shore. Day 2 proved to be more challenging for some but we all persevered and enjoyed an evening by Freya Hoffmeister who told of her her 11 month, 8500 mile solo paddle around Australia, which she completed in December. She is only the second person to complete this circumnavigation, very impressive

Day 3

Another Northern California sunny day was in store. I was paired with Paul Kuthe, my friend from Eastern Horizons to run a rock hopping session. he swell forecasted was large with wave heights of 12 feet with a period of 12 second increasing to 16 feet. To ensure the safety of all participants, the paddling options were limited. We were fortunate to play in some of the rock gardens that demonstrated what an ideal area this is as an advanced paddling destination.

Weather/swell conditions aside, the Golden Gate Sea Kayak Symposium had a little bit of something for every kayaker and every ability; Tidal streams, waves and rocky coastline, Top notch coaches and wonderful scenery at every glance, The San Francisco's famous Anchor Steam Beer did not disappoint either!!! I look forward to going back to this event next year and feel truly fortunate to have been a participant this year.

Njord Storm Gathering

This October, I was lucky enough to be invited to the 8th Annual Njord Storm Gathering in Bulandet Norway. The event originated as a staff appreciation/end of the season party 2003 that has grown into an international paddling event. The event is run by volunteer staff members of the Njord Paddling team. To my delight, English was the language of choice for most events (to say I am not proficient in Norwegian is an understatement!!) Despite the wet and tired participants and a number of damaged boats, energy was high and the Gathering was a great event.

The location

Bulandet is located at the most westerly point of Norway about 200 km northwest of Bergen. This small archipelago is serviced only by ferry. The numerous islands are all interconnected by an award winning highway and bridge system. Composed of mostly conglomerate rock, it is said there is one island for every day of the year. As a result of its isolation and prominence to the ocean, the sea conditions can get very large.

The weather

This area is prone to storms in the early to late Fall. With these great storms the sea state can become challenging and sometimes very dangerous. This state is often due to the swell coming from the North Atlantic. No other place would be as perfect a host for an event called the Storm Gathering. The weather is so unsettled this time of year we experienced a 360 degree shift in wind direction all 4 nights of the gathering. Although the winds were calm during the day, the evening presented winds sometimes at a sustained speed of 45 knots from the North. Given the often weather extremes, the standard local dress is the waterproof equivalent of a one piece snowmobile suit.

The Event

The long week-end was structured with ongoing all day workshops and courses from the Norwegian Paddle Association. The event attracted 120 participants this year, the largest attendance on record. A welcomed site for the local innkeepers!

Clinics offered included: Rock hopper I, Rock Hopper Two, Incident, and advanced stokers practice. The most popular session was the Waffle and Toffel (a lacquer made in Norway) which involved a day trip in calm waters after which everyone sat around and ate waffles at the local waffle shop. Many of the sessions on Saturday were modified due to the conditions. The wind was sometimes blowing 35 knots plus sea states well over 4 meters. Most sessions changed focus to paddling in high winds and rescue manoeuvres. We spent a considerable amount of time swimming in the frigid waters which resulted in very weary participants at days’ end.

Group meals were held at the local community hall during which various slide shows were presented. Last year there was a surprise meal of sheep testicles but lucky for us there were no surprises this year! The slide show presentations included: Paddling in Atlantic Canada given by Christopher Lockyer, Paddling in Cortez by Torbjorn Bjelland, and Paddling in Greenland by Camille Lancke.

We had a wonderful time and are already planning the next trip to Norway to attend the Njord Sea kayak symposium schedules for early May 2009. Getting to Bergen

Traveling to Norway is very easy; once you get to London, Norwegian Airlines flies directly to Bergen. You may want to look for cheaper airlines but after our experience we believe this is the best route to take.

Jon Kenyon, a family friend, was diagnosed with Acute Myelogenous Leukemia (AML) in 2005. Jon and his family had an extremely difficult struggle but persevered and stayed strong through it all. Jon and I shared a passion for sea kayaking and I wanted to use this passion as a way to remember Jon and raise money for research. I am completing this paddle for all those sea kayakers like Jon who are not able to get out and enjoy the ocean and all it has to offer and to support their recovery.
